I finally made the drive out to the Winelands this past weekend for our first family visit to the Winelands Light Railway. If you have a toddler, you know that anything involving a “choo-choo” is a guaranteed win, and my little boy did not disappoint, keeping up a steady stream of train noises from the moment we arrived at the platform.
The layout is quite clever for parents of high-energy kids. It is essentially a large, open park space with sprawling grassy areas, a sandpit, and a jungle gym, all centered around the miniature railway tracks. We opted for the unlimited ride tickets at R120 per person, which turned out to be a smart move. Our son was ready to hop right back into the queue the second one journey ended, and having the freedom to just keep riding meant we didn’t have to keep digging for our wallets.
The trains themselves are the main draw, and they are kept in great condition, offering a genuine miniature rail experience that circles the grounds. For those who might not have a train-obsessed child, there is a cheaper entry option at R70 per person which includes park access and just one ride. I also chatted with a few regulars who mentioned they use the R480 annual passes, which seems to make sense if you live nearby and want a reliable spot for the kids to run off some steam.
One thing I noticed while we were there is that the cafeteria offerings are a bit on the limited side. While there is a spot to grab a quick bite, the outdoor seating area is perfectly set up for a more substantial spread. My advice to anyone planning a trip is to pack a proper picnic basket and some snacks. It makes the day much easier when hunger strikes between train rides, and there is plenty of space to spread out a blanket while the kids tackle the playground.
The atmosphere is relaxed and very much geared towards young families. Between the event spaces and the general park facilities, it feels like a well-managed local resource rather than a frantic tourist trap. If you are looking for a weekend outing where the kids can actually be kids, the short trip out to this corner of the Winelands is well worth the time.
