Our son’s first Easter hunt brought sunny gumboot adventures, marshmallow eggs and cars hidden around our Helderberg apartment garden. Pure toddler joy and proud grandma calls.

This year we decided to create a special Easter hunt right at home for our little boy. The morning turned out beautifully warm and sunny, perfect for an outdoor adventure after the previous night’s rain. We pulled on our gumboots to handle the wet grass and dew, then headed out to the parking lot and garden around our apartment complex. Easter Bunny had been busy scattering marshmallow eggs and a few surprise toy cars – because our son is absolutely obsessed with anything that has wheels.

Getting Started on the Hunt

It was his very first proper Easter egg hunt, so it took him a few moments to understand exactly what we were looking for. We pointed out a couple of colourful eggs tucked near the flowerbeds and under a few parked cars, but once he spotted that first marshmallow egg, everything clicked. His eyes turned into little lasers, scanning every corner of the perimeter with pure determination.

He toddled around with such focus, gumboots splashing through damp patches as he collected his treasures. The mix of sweet eggs and tiny cars made it extra exciting for him. We had hidden them at different heights and spots – some easy to spot, others requiring a bit of searching – so he could feel that thrill of discovery without getting frustrated. Watching him light up each time he found something new brought the biggest smiles to our faces.

The Highlight by His Bedroom Window

The absolute highlight of the morning waited just outside his bedroom window. Easter Bunny had left a special white bus right there, almost like a private delivery. Of course, the first thing our son did was check if the wheels spun round and round and if the doors opened properly. He examined it with such care and joy, sitting right there on the grass in his gumboots while the sun warmed everything up.

These simple moments – a sunny patch of garden, a few hidden surprises, and a child completely absorbed in play – remind us why creating these traditions at home feels so special, especially in our Helderberg community where family life moves at a gentle, outdoor-friendly pace.

Proudly Sharing the Treasures

Back inside the apartment, he was utterly content. He carefully arranged his collection of marshmallow eggs and cars, then insisted on calling Grandma right away to show off his haul. You could hear the pride in his voice as he told her all about being a “good boy” this year and how it had finally paid off with these wonderful goodies. It was one of those heart-melting conversations that parents treasure.

We loved seeing how something as straightforward as a home Easter hunt created so much excitement and lasting memories. No big crowds or fancy venues needed – just a bit of planning, some creativity with the hiding spots, and plenty of love. Our son is already talking about next year, and we cannot wait to make it even better. These are the kinds of simple family mornings that make life in Somerset West and surrounds feel so special.
