Astron Energy opens at Victoria Street in Somerset West

Astron Energy is now selling fuel at 50 Victoria Street, Somerset West. FreshStop is due to open next week, followed by Vida e Caffè in about two weeks.

The new Astron Energy forecourt at 50 Victoria Street, Somerset West, began selling fuel on Friday, 23 October 2026. Two bowsers were open when I visited, while FreshStop was being prepared for opening and Vida e Caffè remained closed.

For months, the former Caltex Auto West Delta site on Victoria Street has been one of those developments that has been hard to ignore. I have been following it since July, when Burger King Drive-Thru signage first appeared, and have watched the work progress as the Astron Energy branding went up and the forecourt took shape.

More recently, a fuel tanker arriving on site was another sign that an opening was getting close. On Friday, 23 October 2026, the new Astron Energy fuel station finally began serving motorists.

It is a different feeling seeing cars pull in to fill up than seeing another sign go up or another stage of construction completed. The site is no longer just something to watch while passing along Victoria Street. It is now somewhere motorists can stop and buy fuel, even though not everything is ready for customers yet.

Fuel now available at the new forecourt

When I visited, only the two furthest bowsers were open. The other bowsers looked finished and functional, but red-and-white caution tape had been placed across them, keeping motorists away.

The roadside pylon was displaying R29.49 per litre for unleaded petrol and R34.90 per litre for diesel. Those were the prices shown when I visited the site.

The large orange Astron Energy pylon is also carrying the FreshStop, UCount Rewards and Burger King branding, bringing together the different offerings planned for the property. For anyone who has followed the development from the first signs of construction, it is now much easier to see how the site is intended to work as a whole.

FreshStop getting ready to open

FreshStop, the convenience retail brand associated with Astron Energy forecourts, is also part of the development. It was not open when I visited, but there was plenty happening inside.

Furniture was being moved around, tills were being set up and staff were busy getting the store ready. It was the sort of behind-the-scenes activity customers rarely see once a shop is up and running, but it offered a clear indication that the next opening is approaching.

FreshStop is expected to open next week, giving motorists another reason to stop at the forecourt beyond filling up. For now, however, the work inside is still under way, and the doors remain closed to customers.

A first look at Vida e Caffè still to come

The new Vida e Caffè will add a coffee stop to the Victoria Street development, but its opening is a little further away. It is expected to open in about two weeks.

I could not get inside when I visited because it was still closed, so a first look at the new outlet will have to wait until it is ready to welcome customers. I’ll return to see how it has been fitted out and what the finished space looks like.

For motorists who have been waiting for the development to open, there is no need to wait for every part of it to be ready before stopping for fuel. The two open bowsers are already serving customers, while FreshStop is expected to follow next week. The coffee shop will take a little longer, with Vida e Caffè due in about two weeks.
