Chery Q Set to Arrive in Somerset West in September 2026

The Chery Q is expected to arrive at Chery Somerset West in September 2026, with a demo arriving by early September and local pre-orders already underway.

The Chery Q came onto my radar after Chery announced the pre-order launch of the model in South Africa. With the brand’s Somerset West dealership serving the Helderberg, I wanted to find out what local customers could expect from the arrival of the new electric vehicle.

Chery Somerset West expects its first Q models to arrive in September 2026, with a demonstration vehicle expected at the end of August or early September 2026.

That will give prospective buyers an opportunity to see the vehicle and take it for a test drive before deliveries begin.

Chery’s first fully electric option

The Q is significant for Chery in South Africa because it is the brand’s first fully electric vehicle option in the country.

But the dealership is not positioning it primarily as a car for existing EV enthusiasts.

Chery Somerset West says the Q is aimed at budget-conscious urban motorists, first-time electric vehicle buyers and people looking for an affordable, compact daily commuter.

The dealership says the vehicle will offer a range of 300 to 400km, putting it within the sort of range it believes will work for everyday driving.

An EV aimed at everyday driving

For someone considering an electric vehicle for the first time, one of the obvious questions is what ownership will actually look like.

Chery Somerset West says the Q can be charged from 30% to 80% in 17 minutes using a DC charger at the mall, while charging from 0% to 100% using an AC charger at home takes around seven hours.

The dealership also says maintenance costs are expected to be low. It points out that the more expensive maintenance items are likely to involve the brakes and inspection of the vehicle’s cooling system.

The launch offer is also intended to make charging easier for new EV owners.

Customers purchasing the Q will receive a home charging pile, portable charger and a charging card or deposit contribution, giving owners options for charging at home, at the office or while out and about.

Local interest is already building

The Q may still be waiting to arrive at the Somerset West dealership, but Chery says there is already interest locally.

The dealership has confirmed that it has a few pre-order customers in the Helderberg area.

That means some local motorists have already committed to the Q before being able to see the demonstration vehicle at the dealership.

What could the Q change?

Chery Somerset West believes the arrival of the Q could make a significant difference to the local EV market, particularly because of its focus on affordability.

For buyers who have been interested in electric vehicles but have regarded them as too expensive or impractical for everyday use, the Q is being presented as a different proposition: a compact vehicle designed primarily around daily commuting, with relatively low maintenance costs and a range of 300 to 400km.

For me, the interesting part will be seeing how that proposition translates when the first car actually arrives in Somerset West. It is one thing to read about an affordable electric commuter, but quite another to see the vehicle in person, sit inside it and work out whether it makes sense for everyday Helderberg driving.

The first demo is expected at the end of August or early September 2026, with the first customer vehicles expected to arrive in September 2026.
