PadelX has officially opened at Somerset Crossing in Somerset West, becoming the town’s first indoor padel facility and introducing four climate-controlled courts, a café, pro shop and family-friendly amenities under one roof.
Padel has grown rapidly across South Africa over the past few years, with new courts appearing in towns and cities across the country. Somerset West has now joined that momentum with the opening of PadelX, a purpose-built indoor padel facility at Somerset Crossing, 12 Pacific Close.
The facility officially opened its doors on 28 October 2023, following months of anticipation. According to the team behind the project, the idea was inspired by visits to padel facilities both in South Africa and abroad, with the goal of bringing a world-class indoor playing experience to the Helderberg.
More Than Just Indoor Padel Courts
Rather than focusing solely on the sport itself, PadelX has been designed as a multi-purpose venue where players and spectators can spend time before and after their matches.
The indoor facility features four climate-controlled courts, electronic scoring on every court and “Push-It” replay technology that allows players to relive key moments from their games. There’s also a dedicated warm-up area, equipment rental, changing rooms, free parking and Wi-Fi.
For those looking to upgrade their gear, the on-site PadelX Pro Shop stocks equipment and accessories from brands including Head, Tecnifibre and Drop Shot, while the facility also offers private coaching sessions, corporate events and children’s birthday parties.
Families have not been overlooked either. A dedicated kids’ play area allows younger visitors to stay entertained while parents are on court, making the venue accessible to players at different stages of life.
A Public Café Alongside the Courts
One feature that sets the venue apart is PadelX Café, which is open to the public and not only to people booking a court.
The café serves award-winning coffee together with light meals and refreshments, creating another casual meeting spot within Somerset Crossing. Whether you’re waiting for a match to finish, catching up with friends or simply stopping by for coffee, the café operates independently from the playing courts.
Building a Local Padel Community
Since opening, PadelX has positioned itself as more than simply a place to play. The team regularly hosts community activities and encourages players of all ages and experience levels to get involved, whether they’re picking up a racket for the first time or already competing regularly.
Bookings are made through the Playtomic app, allowing players to reserve courts throughout the week. The facility operates daily from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm.
As padel continues to grow across South Africa, it’s interesting to see Somerset West home to the town’s first dedicated indoor facility. It adds another recreational option to the Helderberg, giving local players a year-round venue while introducing a sport that continues to attract newcomers of all ages.
