Avontuur Restaurant, a long standing fixture of the Cape Winelands dining scene, has announced it will close its doors permanently on Monday, 11 May 2026.
The closure marks the end of twenty four years of operation for the Somerset West establishment. Management confirmed in a public statement on Thursday, 19 March 2026, that the decision follows a move by the property landlords not to renew the current lease agreement.
Led by Melanie Paltoglou and Zunia Boucher Myers, the restaurant gained recognition for signature dishes including crispy duck, deep fried ice cream, pork belly, and sole. The owners described the kitchen as being shaped by strong, skilled women and a dedicated team that carried the business through twenty four years of trade.
Management has issued a call to the local hospitality industry to assist staff members who will be displaced by the closure. The announcement noted that a number of team members will be seeking new opportunities and invited interested employers to contact the restaurant directly.
The individual founders have already begun transitioning to new ventures. Melanie and the Paltoglou family have opened Elysium Eatery in Somerset West. Zunia has reportedly moved to Uganda to begin a new professional chapter.
Due to the limited time remaining before the final day of trade, the restaurant has encouraged patrons to book in advance. Reservations are currently being managed through the Dineplan platform or via direct telephone contact.
Avontuur Restaurant has been a regular feature in the local culinary landscape, previously appearing in the Eat Out 500 list of top South African dining destinations. Management expressed gratitude to the staff and patrons who formed part of the business’s history over more than two decades.
