If you happened to pass through Helderberg Centre on Easter Sunday, you might’ve noticed something a little different near the Clicks entrance. What’s usually just another corner of the mall had been turned into a bright, cheerful space filled with kids, colour, and more than a little sugar.
The star of the show for many kids was the DIY Candy Kit. Each kit came in a cute box, giving children everything they needed to build their own sweet treats. The instructions were simple and fun: start with a stick, choose your favourite sweets from a selection of different colours and flavours, and then stack and create your own pattern. Our son had an absolute blast threading his candy kebabs before sliding them into a plastic sleeve to save for later.
Just behind the candy station, there was a massive art wall – Helderberg Centre’s Easter Masterpiece. It started as a blank canvas but quickly came to life as creative kids used the provided crayons to add their own magic. Watching the wall transform from a simple outline into a colourful masterpiece was a real highlight, and it was clearly a hit with all the budding artists in the community.
While the kids were busy with their candy and crayons, the parents were treated to what I can only describe as the cherry on top: free waffles on a stick! These were baked on the spot by Snowball Events CPT. You could smell them from a mile away, and the best part was getting to choose your own toppings.
It’s easy for shopping centres to feel transactional, so moments like this—simple, a bit messy, and genuinely engaging—tend to stick.
It was great that Helderberg Centre put together such a thoughtful, fun, and delicious experience for the families in our area. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the season.
