Why is storm debris still uncleared a month after the storm?
The severe storm that hit the Western Cape, causing significant damage in and around the Helderberg area, occurred primarily on Sunday, 7 April 2024.
I was honnestly impressed with the authorities’ prompt response in clearing the roads. The next day, on Monday, all the roads in Somerset West (at least the ones we drove on) were mostly cleared.
Fallen trees, branches, and other blockages had been moved to the side of the road to prioritize immediate traffic flow.
However, today, 5 May 2024, nearly a month later, the remnants of the storm’s damage remain. The city appears to have neglected clearing the debris from the sides of the streets.
These pictures were taken today on Helderberg College Road, between Old Stellenbosch Road (near De Helderbosch KWIKSPAR) and Louis Botha Avenue in Somerset West.
