The mid-winter chill in the Helderberg always feels a little more pronounced when the weekend routine is broken. For many of us living in Somerset West and the surrounding areas, a visit to the Lourensford Market isn’t just a shopping trip; it’s a habitual part of how we spend our Saturdays and/or Sundays. Since the market shifted into its winter break, there has been a noticeable gap in the local weekend calendar.
Soon enough, we will see the grounds of the estate bustling with families, live music, and that familiar mix of woodsmoke and roasting coffee. According to the market’s official notices, the team is currently behind the scenes refreshing the space and preparing for the upcoming summer season.
I still remember the first time I really understood the draw of this place. It was back in October last year, a clear spring morning when I finally stopped by the CinnaWinks stall. I had heard people talking about them, but trying one of their cinnamon rolls for the first time was easily the highlight of that visit.
There is something specific about the way they do them — the dough is soft, and the cream cheese frosting has that perfect balance that makes it an indulgence without being overwhelming. For those of us who have made those rolls a regular part of our market habit, the current break means counting down the weeks until they are back on the trays.
The official winter break is a planned pause for the market to reset. While the stalls are empty for now, the organisers promise the return of the various local vendors, food stalls, and live entertainment that define the summer experience here. It is a transition period that the estate uses to gear up for the high-volume months when the lawns are packed.
The countdown is currently at two months. Based on the signage and the market’s latest updates, the full reopening is scheduled for later in September. It marks the unofficial start of the warmer season for the Helderberg community, and I suspect I won’t be the only one heading straight for the cinnamon rolls once the gates open again. Until then, we have a few more quiet winter weekends to get through.
