Stones Durbanville, a prominent entertainment venue in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs, has announced it will close its doors on 28 February after 27 years of operation. Management attributed the closure to a terminated lease agreement.
In a statement released via social media, the establishment identified its landlords as Mowana Properties and the Public Investment Corporation (PIC), which manages the Government Employees Pension Fund. Stones Durbanville claimed that despite being a ‘loyal, responsible tenant’ for nearly three decades, its lease was terminated and requests to vacate the premises were issued.
According to the venue’s head office, extensive negotiations were held to preserve the location. Management claims they offered to pay the full remainder of the lease upfront, but all proposals were reportedly declined without a substantive reason.
The closure marks the end of a long-standing fixture in the Durbanville social scene, known for its pool tournaments, karaoke evenings, and nightlife. The venue held its final pool competition on 23 February and is scheduled to host its final event, featuring DJames, this Saturday.
Despite the loss of the current site, Stones management indicated that they are actively seeking alternative premises within the Northern Suburbs to continue operations. The Durbanville branch had been a staple for the community, employing a full team of staff and hosting regular events for patrons spanning multiple generations.
Mowana Properties and the PIC have not yet publicly commented on the reasons behind the lease termination or future plans for the site. Stones Durbanville has urged anyone with leads on suitable new premises to contact them.
