One thing has continued to surprise us since moving to Somerset West. It doesn’t matter what time of day we visit Strand Beach—there always seems to be someone enjoying it.
Whether it’s a quiet weekday morning, a breezy winter afternoon or after sunset, the beachfront never really feels empty. It’s one of the many reasons we’ve come to love living in the Helderberg.
Most of our family beach outings happen during the first half of the day. We’ll usually arrive sometime between 9 am and 12 pm, when our son has plenty of energy to run between the waves, dig endless holes in the sand and proudly show us every pebble he’s “discovered.”
Morning visits have become our favourite. The beach feels relaxed, parking is usually easy to find, and it’s the perfect way to spend a few hours outdoors as a family.
Sometimes, after dropping our son off at school, we’ll even return for a peaceful walk along the beachfront before the day gets busy.
Earlier this year, we experienced Strand Beach from a completely different perspective.
In May, we joined a beach clean-up that started at around 4 pm. At first, I assumed most people would be heading home by then. Instead, the beach remained wonderfully busy.
Some families were still playing on the sand, others were relaxing in camping chairs, and many looked as though they had come specifically to enjoy the late afternoon and watch the sunset over False Bay.
We stayed until around 6 pm for a spectacular fireshow, and by the time it ended, darkness had settled over the beach. Even then, people were still there. Some continued walking along the shoreline, while others remained seated, chatting quietly as the waves rolled in.
It made me wonder how many people purposely visit Strand Beach at night simply to enjoy a peaceful walk beneath the moon.
Of course, this is South Africa. Like anywhere, it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings, take sensible safety precautions and use good judgement, especially after dark.
Even so, there’s something comforting about seeing people continuing to enjoy the beachfront well into the evening. It speaks to the role Strand Beach plays in everyday life for so many people living in the Helderberg.
This year, our grandma visited us from Joburg. Naturally, Strand Beach was one of the very first places we wanted to show her. No tour of Somerset West feels complete without spending time by the ocean.
Our son was especially excited to introduce Grandma to his favourite beach activities. He proudly demonstrated his very important work of excavating pebbles, digging channels for the water to flow through the sand and, of course, building sandcastles that somehow always seemed bigger in his imagination.
Watching the two of them together on the beach became one of those simple family moments we’ll remember for years.
Perhaps that’s what amazes me most. It doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s the middle of January or a cool day in June. Whether the wind is a gentle 14 km/h or picks up to 29 km/h. Whether you visit in the morning, during the afternoon or later in the evening.
There are always people enjoying Strand Beach. Some come for a swim. Others came for a walk. Families build sandcastles, children chase the waves, friends enjoy picnics, runners follow the promenade, and couples simply sit and admire the view across False Bay.
For us, that’s become one of the best things about living in Somerset West. Strand Beach isn’t just a place people visit during the holidays. It’s a place people return to, day after day, because it’s simply part of life in the Helderberg.
