Sea Point’s Iconic Bella Italia Finds a New Home in Somerset West

Bella Italia, one of the Western Cape’s oldest Italian restaurants, has relocated from Sea Point to Somerset West, bringing decades of Italian tradition to the Helderberg.

One of Cape Town’s best-known Italian restaurants has found a new home in the Helderberg. Bella Italia, a long-standing Sea Point favourite since 1999, is now serving customers from its new premises at 122 Caledon Street in the Oudehuis Centre, Somerset West.

The move marks a new chapter for a restaurant with deep roots in the Western Cape’s dining scene. Before becoming Bella Italia in 1999, the establishment traded as Caponero from the 1970s and is recognised as the oldest Italian eatery in the Western Cape, earning a loyal following over several decades for its authentic, homemade Italian cuisine.

A New Chapter for a Cape Town Favourite

The restaurant announced that, due to unforeseen circumstances, it had to close its Sea Point premises at very short notice. Rather than bringing the journey to an end, the owners chose to relocate Bella Italia to Somerset West.

While the address has changed, the menu remains focused on the homemade Italian dishes that built the restaurant’s reputation over the years. Diners can expect favourites including Vongole (baby clams), wood-fired pizzas, gelato, tiramisu, and a range of traditional Italian meals served for both lunch and dinner.

Bella Italia’s arrival in Somerset West isn’t simply the opening of another restaurant. It marks the continuation of a story that began in the 1970s, bringing decades of Italian tradition and a well-known Cape Town name to the Helderberg for the very first time.
