12-Hour Power Outage Planned for Parts of Somerset West and Helderberg

The City of Cape Town has scheduled a 12-hour overnight power outage for parts of Somerset West and the Helderberg to carry out critical electricity upgrades.

I have been keeping an eye on the City’s maintenance schedules lately because it feels like our corner of the world has been under constant construction. Between the pipe replacements that finally saw the holes filled in just a few days ago and general upkeep, it has been a busy season for infrastructure in Somerset West. Now, there is another major project on the horizon that is going to require some coordination from those of us living in the affected pockets.

The City of Cape Town has issued a reminder about a significant electricity supply interruption scheduled for parts of Helderberg and Somerset West. According to the official announcement, this is for critical infrastructure upgrades and maintenance. For those of us in areas like Monte Sereno, Helena Heights, and Schonenberg, it means preparing for a full night without power this coming weekend.

Timing and duration of the work

The work is set to take place overnight to hopefully minimise the disruption to our daily routines. The City notes that the interruption is scheduled to begin on Saturday, 27 June 2026, at 18:00 and is expected to run through until Sunday, 28 June 2026, at 06:00.

The 12-hour window is quite a stretch, but the timing suggests they are trying to avoid the peak weekday rush. The announcement does mention that if things do not go according to plan due to weather or other variables, an alternate date will be provided.

Areas expected to be affected

The list of impacted neighbourhoods is extensive. According to the City’s bulletin, residents in the following areas should prepare for the outage: Lynn’s View, Bel’Aire, Helderberg Village, Vredenberg, Jonkers Hoogte, Helderberg Estate, La Montagne, Fraai Gelegen, Steenbras View, Helena Heights, Heldervue, Die Wingerd, Schonenberg, Somerset Ridge, Briza, The Link, Westridge, Silverboomkloof, Spanish Farm, La Concorde, La Sandra, Monte Sereno, Highveld, Montchere, Goede Hoop, and Pearl Marina.

It is worth noting that even if your specific suburb is not on that list, the City has cautioned that large-scale work like this can sometimes affect surrounding streets. They have made a digital map available to show the exact footprint of the outage.

Practical safety reminders

Because these are major upgrades, there are a few safety points the City has asked us to keep in mind. The supply could actually be restored earlier than 06:00, so they advise treating all electrical installations as live for the entire duration of the project.

It is also a good idea to switch off sensitive appliances before 18:00 on Saturday. This helps avoid any potential damage from power surges when the electricity is eventually switched back on. It is exactly the kind of thing I like to flag for people around here, as it is easy to forget when you are busy with Saturday evening plans. For anyone with specific concerns, the City’s call centre is available at 0860 103 089.

Update (29 June 2026)

The outage lasted considerably longer than originally planned. I’ve published a follow-up covering what happened on the day and why many residents were left frustrated by the lack of communication.
