Asami’s Relocates from Somerset Mall to New Gordon’s Bay Home

Asami’s has relocated from Somerset Mall to Gordon’s Bay, opening a new restaurant at The Village Plaza after closing its Somerset West branch.

After several years at Somerset Mall, Asami’s has relocated to Gordon’s Bay, opening a new restaurant on 1 May 2025 and beginning a new chapter in the Helderberg.

The move came after Asami’s announced in March that its Somerset Mall restaurant would close on 13 April 2025. Rather than leaving the area altogether, the team revealed that the closure would make way for a new Gordon’s Bay branch, promising customers that it was “not goodbye.”

From Somerset Mall to Gordon’s Bay

Asami’s explained that rising operating costs had made it impossible to continue operating from the Somerset Mall location. The announcement was understandably bittersweet for a business that had built up a customer base there over the years, but it also came with news of the planned relocation.

The Somerset Mall restaurant served its final customers on 13 April, after which the team turned its attention to getting the new Gordon’s Bay location ready.

By the end of April, Asami’s was already sharing a first look at the new restaurant and preparing for the 1 May grand opening.

A New Home in Gordon’s Bay

The new Gordon’s Bay restaurant brings the familiar Asami’s offering to a new address, with sushi and other Asian-inspired dishes continuing to form the heart of the offering.

The restaurant is located at 28, The Village Plaza, The Water Way, Gordon’s Bay, where customers can now find the business after its move from Somerset Mall.

The opening weekend turned out to be a particularly busy one. In a follow-up message, Asami’s thanked customers who had travelled to Gordon’s Bay as well as locals who had welcomed the restaurant to the area.

The team also apologised for delays and for running out of some items during the opening weekend, saying that they had not expected such an overwhelming turnout.

Three Branches Across the Cape

The Gordon’s Bay opening also expanded Asami’s local footprint to three branches, with the brand now operating in Gordon’s Bay, Tygervalley and Cape Gate.

For customers who had followed Asami’s from Somerset Mall, the move means the end of one chapter but not the brand itself. It has simply found a new home in Gordon’s Bay while continuing to serve customers from its other locations.

A Relocation, Not a Goodbye

For Somerset West customers who knew Asami’s from its Somerset Mall days, the change of location may have felt like the end of an era. But the move to Gordon’s Bay means the brand has not disappeared from the Helderberg; it has simply found a new home.

What started as a difficult goodbye at Somerset Mall has become a new beginning in Gordon’s Bay, with Asami’s continuing its story from The Village Plaza while keeping its wider Cape Town presence firmly in place.
