CASA DAS NATAS Opens at Somerset Mall, Bringing Authentic Portuguese Pastéis de Nata to the Helderberg

CASA DAS NATAS has opened at Somerset Mall in Somerset West, bringing authentic Portuguese custard tarts, dine-in seating, takeaway and approximately five new local jobs.

One of the things I enjoy about Somerset Mall is that there’s almost always something new to discover. Whether it’s a new retailer, restaurant or café, the centre continues to evolve alongside the Helderberg itself.

During a recent visit, one of the new additions that are part of the Somerset Mall expansion that caught my attention was CASA DAS NATAS. While many people may already know the brand from elsewhere in the country, this marks its arrival in Somerset West and introduces another speciality food offering to the growing mix of eateries at the mall.

After noticing the new café, I contacted CASA DAS NATAS to find out why the Helderberg was chosen for its latest location, what customers can expect and what this expansion means for the brand.

A new home for Portuguese favourites

CASA DAS NATAS officially opened at Somerset Mall on 1 August 2026, becoming the brand’s second Western Cape location after Tyger Valley Shopping Centre.

The café specialises in Pastéis de Nata, the traditional Portuguese custard tart made famous in Lisbon, alongside a selection of hot and cold beverages. Customers can also choose from a variety of flavoured natas, all prepared using the same traditional baking approach that has become synonymous with the brand.

Why Somerset West?

Responding to questions from HelderbergStuff, the company said Somerset Mall was a natural fit because of the diversity of people it attracts every day.

According to CASA DAS NATAS, the combination of families, professionals, students and tourists provides an opportunity to introduce its freshly baked Portuguese pastries to a broad customer base while building a loyal local following.

The company also believes the Helderberg represents an important part of its future growth, describing Somerset Mall as a strong foundation for expanding its presence in the region over time.

Dine in or grab one to go

Although many customers choose to enjoy their natas while shopping, the new Somerset Mall branch caters for both takeaway and sit-down visitors.

The café offers dine-in seating for customers wanting to relax with a coffee and a freshly baked nata before continuing with their day, while takeaway remains the most popular option.

The Somerset West branch offers the full CASA DAS NATAS menu, giving customers the same range of authentic, already-famous Portuguese pastries and beverages.

Creating local jobs

The new café has created approximately five in-store positions.

CASA DAS NATAS explained that, as a grab-and-go concept, the Somerset Mall branch operates with a relatively small front-of-house team, while additional support comes from its central bakery, where products are freshly prepared before being distributed to all of the company’s branches.

The company also confirmed that Mr D and Uber Eats deliveries are planned and will become available once those services go live for the new branch.

More reasons to stop by

Customers visiting the new café can also take advantage of the same promotions available across all CASA DAS NATAS branches, with the company noting that its pricing model rewards customers who purchase more products.

Whether you’re already a fan of Portuguese custard tarts or simply looking to try something different on your next visit to Somerset Mall, CASA DAS NATAS adds another distinctive flavour to the Helderberg’s growing food scene.

As more national and speciality brands continue choosing Somerset West, it’s another sign of how the region’s retail and dining offering continues to expand alongside its growing community.
