Chorus Restaurant by chef Bertus Basson and head chef Marcus Gericke has opened at Waterkloof Wine Estate in Somerset West, following the closure of Overture.
Helderberg food lovers have a new fine-dining destination to explore. Chorus Restaurant, the latest venture from renowned South African chef Bertus Basson, has officially opened at Waterkloof Wine Estate in Somerset West.
The restaurant welcomed its first guests on 18 October 2022, marking the beginning of a new chapter following the closure of Overture Restaurant at Hidden Valley Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. Overture permanently closed its doors on 30 September 2022, bringing to an end a successful 15-year run as one of the Cape Winelands’ best-known fine-dining establishments.
A New Chapter at Waterkloof Wine Estate
Located on the slopes of the Helderberg, Chorus is led by Bertus Basson in collaboration with head chef Marcus Gericke, who previously worked alongside Basson at Overture.
The restaurant centres its menu around seasonal, ingredient-driven cooking, offering both four-course and six-course tasting menus that celebrate local produce through simple, refined dishes. Diners familiar with Overture will also be pleased to know that some signature favourites, including the restaurant’s well-known soufflé, have found a place on the new menu.
The wine experience naturally complements its surroundings, with Waterkloof Estate wines featured prominently alongside a carefully selected list of other respected South African producers.
The move also sees several familiar faces from Overture continuing the journey. Shaun and Albert now lead the front-of-house team, helping provide the same warm hospitality many returning guests have come to know over the years.
The restaurant itself has been thoughtfully refreshed, featuring custom-designed crockery by Corinne de Haas and interior design input from Naturalis, creating an elegant space that complements the sweeping vineyard and False Bay views for which Waterkloof Wine Estate is known.
For those not looking for the full tasting experience, Chorus also includes a relaxed lounge area where visitors can enjoy a glass of wine and light snacks without booking a tasting menu.
The restaurant is open for lunch from Tuesday to Sunday and dinner from Thursday to Saturday.
The opening of Chorus adds another notable dining destination to Somerset West’s growing culinary scene while continuing the legacy established by Overture. For Helderberg residents and visitors alike, it offers another opportunity to experience destination dining surrounded by some of the region’s most spectacular vineyard and mountain views.
