If you have ever spent time in Somerset West, you will know that while it feels like a small town, it is actually a collection of very distinct pockets. Each corner of our beautiful town offers a completely different vantage point, from the sprawling vineyards at the foot of the mountains to the elevated streets that look out over the bay.
I was reminded of this yesterday, Thursday, 18 June 2026, while driving through Rome Glen. Situated in the eastern part of Somerset West, Rome Glen is one of those suburbs that feels a world away from the busy Main Road. It is hilly, exceptionally clean, and undeniably beautiful, offering some of the most striking scenic views you can find in the Helderberg.
Even the weather seems to have its own personality up there. It can get quite windy at times due to the elevation, but that just seems to clear the air for those incredible views. As I wound my way through the streets, I could not help but stop for a moment to take in the snapshots of the city unfolding below.
My trip to Rome Glen was not just for the scenery, though. I was on my way to visit the team at Halli Trust to drop off some baby items. If you are not familiar with them, Halli Trust does incredible work within our community, providing support and resources where they are needed most.
Being able to support their mission while catching a glimpse of the town from a fresh perspective was a perfect mid-week reset. It is a lovely reminder that even in a place we think we know well, there is always a new hill to climb or a different view to appreciate.
