The Panda Store has opened on Main Road in Somerset West, bringing a new variety store offering household goods, stationery, toys, décor and more.
If you’ve driven along Main Road recently, you may have noticed the new addition on the corner of Main Road and Gordon Road. That’s exactly how I discovered The Panda Store. The large signage immediately caught my eye, and what was striking was just how big the store looks from the outside — it’s almost impossible to miss.
A new addition to a busy stretch
The Panda Store has officially opened at 73B Main Road, Somerset West. It’s located next to Vida e Caffè at Riverside, just across from Engen Droomers Garage and Somerset Square Shopping Centre, right in the middle of one of the town’s busiest commercial stretches.
According to the store’s opening announcement, it welcomed its first customers at the end of May. The opening itself passed relatively quietly, but the prominent storefront has already made the new business hard to overlook for anyone travelling along Main Road.
More Than Just One Type of Shop
Before looking into it, I wasn’t entirely sure what kind of shop The Panda Store was.
It turns out it’s one of those variety stores that brings together a wide range of everyday products under one roof. From household essentials and kitchenware to stationery, toys, décor, luggage, tools, phone accessories and small electronics, the store offers a little bit of everything.
Rather than specialising in a single category, it appears to be aimed at shoppers who enjoy browsing for practical items while discovering the occasional unexpected find. It’s the kind of shop where you might walk in for one thing and leave with a few more than you originally planned.
These types of variety retailers have become increasingly common across South Africa in recent years, and it’s interesting to see another one arrive in Somerset West.
Another New Business for Somerset West
It’s always encouraging to see another commercial space occupied, particularly along a road as well-travelled as Main Road. The Panda Store is certainly one of those businesses that catches your attention the first time you drive past. Now that I know a little more about it, it’s definitely a store I’ll be popping into to see what it’s like inside.
