UniCare is opening a new 24-hour pharmacy in Somerset West with after-hours doctors, specialist clinics and round-the-clock healthcare near Somerset Mall.
If you have ever had that sinking feeling at 9:00 PM when you realise your little one is running a fever and the medicine cabinet is empty, you know exactly how stressful finding out of hours medical help can be. For those of us living in the Helderberg, the usual trek to Mediclinic Vergelegen on Main Road is fine for emergencies, but it is a bit much when you just need a bottle of Calpol or some Rinex for a blocked nose.
While driving along Broadway Boulevard near Somerset Mall recently, I spotted a bright new billboard that is going to make life a lot easier for local parents and night owls alike. A brand new UniCare 24/7 Pharmacy is opening its doors on Thursday, 30 April 2026.
Convenience Right Around the Corner
The new sign, located just past the Futurama and Golfers Club shops, confirms that this is not just a place to pick up prescriptions. The new facility, situated at The Meltz Building on 10 Urtel Crescent in the Somerset Triangle, is set to include after-hours doctors and specialized clinics. It serves as a much-needed bridge between a standard neighborhood chemist and a full hospital emergency room.
For many of us in Somerset West, the challenge has always been the limited hours of existing hospital pharmacies, which often close earlier in the evening. Having a dedicated 24-hour spot right near the mall means no more second-guessing whether you should wait until morning or face the long ER queues for simple over-the-counter essentials like lozenges or adhesive bandages.
What This Means for the Helderberg Community
The addition of specialized clinics alongside the pharmacy suggests a more holistic approach to our local healthcare. Whether it is a sudden flu or a minor injury that happens after the sun goes down, having access to medical professionals just around the corner is a massive relief.
It is always heartening to see new services that actually solve a daily problem for the community. Mark your calendars for Thursday, 30 April 2026, and keep an eye out for the big blue billboard next time you are heading towards the N2. It is definitely a welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
