We expected packed parking, strong winds and overcrowded beaches over New Year—but Strand Beach surprised us with the perfect family day out.
The festive season always brings thousands of visitors to the Helderberg. With Strand Beach being one of the area’s favourite coastal destinations, we honestly weren’t sure what to expect during the New Year holidays. We’d already pictured ourselves circling for parking, squeezing through packed crowds and battling strong coastal winds.
As it turned out, we couldn’t have been more wrong.
The crowds were there—but not overwhelming
Yes, the beach was busy. Families, groups of friends and holidaymakers had all claimed their spots along the shoreline, creating the lively atmosphere you’d expect during the festive season.
But it never felt overcrowded. There was still plenty of space to spread out, the beach didn’t feel chaotic, and everyone simply seemed to be enjoying another beautiful summer’s day by the ocean.
Parking was easier than expected
One of our biggest concerns before leaving home was parking. Anyone who’s visited popular beaches during the holidays knows it can sometimes take longer to find a parking bay than it does to drive there.
Thankfully, Strand Beach surprised us again. We found a parking spot without much trouble, which meant we could spend less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying the day.
The weather couldn’t have been better
We were also expecting the usual strong Strand wind. Instead, we were treated to one of those rare beach days where everything simply worked.
With the wind staying below 20 km/h, there was just enough of a breeze to keep everyone comfortable without sending umbrellas, towels and beach toys flying down the shoreline. The sunshine was warm without being unbearable, the ocean looked inviting, and an ice cream tasted even better after a few hours on the sand.
Sometimes the simplest ingredients make for the perfect family outing.
Watching our little one never gets old
Every beach trip reminds us just how entertaining children can be.
Our son has a way of making us laugh without even trying. One moment he’s completely focused on chasing waves, the next he’s making funny faces or reacting to something so dramatically that he feels like a real-life internet meme.
Those little moments are often the ones we remember most long after we’ve packed everything away.
The beach is wonderful. The clean-up? Not so much.
As much as we love spending time at Strand Beach, there’s one part of every outing we could happily skip. The journey home is easy. What happens after that is another story.
The moment we walk through the front door, it’s a race against the sand. Shoes come off. Towels get shaken. Clothes somehow release another kilogram of beach sand onto the floor. Then everyone rushes to the shower while trying not to spread sand through the rest of the house.
And just when you think the clean-up is over, there’s still one final reminder of the day waiting outside. The car. After another family beach adventure, a valet wash usually climbs straight to the top of the to-do list.
Another reminder that Strand Beach is worth the trip
Sometimes we build up expectations that never become reality. We expected overwhelming crowds. We expected impossible parking. We expected strong winds.
Instead, we found a lively but comfortable beach, beautiful weather, easy parking, plenty of family laughs and another memorable day by the ocean.
A little extra sand in the house and another trip to the car wash? We’ll happily take that trade-off every time.
