What We Found at the Southey Vines Car Boot Market in Somerset West

A visit to the Southey Vines Car Boot Market in Somerset West turned into a morning of hidden treasures, toddler life lessons and a reminder to always carry cash.

If you have ever wandered through a car boot sale hoping to find something unexpected, you’ll know that the best discoveries are usually the ones you weren’t looking for.

That was certainly the case when we recently spent a Saturday morning at the Southey Vines Car Boot Market at 186 Main Road, Somerset West. We arrived with no shopping list and no particular mission, simply wanting to enjoy one of the Helderberg’s best-known weekend markets and see what caught our eye.

A treasure hunt at Southey Vines

With more than 100 stalls, the variety was staggering.

Whether you’re a collector searching for antiques, a book lover hoping to stumble across a forgotten paperback, or simply looking for homemade preserves, plants or second-hand bargains, there is something around almost every corner. We spotted everything from vintage jewellery and collectibles to clothing, household items and handmade goods, making every aisle feel like its own little treasure hunt.

One of the first things we realised as we browsed was that some traditions haven’t changed.

While admiring some of the homemade treats and locally made products, we quickly noticed that many of the vendors still operate on a cash-only basis. If you’re planning a visit to the Southey Vines Car Boot Market, it’s well worth stopping at an ATM beforehand. You don’t want to discover the perfect vintage find or homemade delicacy only to realise you can’t pay for it.

A relaxed atmosphere from start to finish

Despite being one of the most popular car boot markets in Somerset West, the atmosphere was remarkably calm.

One of the biggest stressors of any weekend outing is usually the logistics, but free parking was readily available right at the market. It made the start of our morning effortless.

Inside the market, families wandered from stall to stall, collectors patiently searched for hidden gems, and conversations between buyers and sellers felt just as important as the bargains themselves. It had the relaxed, community feel that keeps people coming back month after month.

Small cars and big lessons

We had gone with absolutely no intention of buying toys. Naturally, that plan lasted about five minutes. Our son eventually chose two small die-cast cars: a bright red bakkie and a blue SUV. He was thrilled with his decision… until we started moving to another vendor.

Only then did he realise that some of the other stalls had much bigger toy cars that he hadn’t even noticed. The excitement quickly turned into classic toddler regret, complete with a few tears over choosing the “small” cars instead of waiting to see everything the market had to offer.

It became one of those funny parenting moments that most mums and dads will recognise immediately. Sometimes the first lesson in decision-making comes disguised as a toy car.

An unexpected find before heading home

Before we climbed into our own car, the market had one final surprise waiting for us.

Parked nearby was a beautifully maintained classic vehicle that wasn’t even part of the sale. For anyone who enjoys cars, it felt like the perfect cherry on top of the morning and a fitting reminder that at a car boot sale, the treasures aren’t always sitting on the tables. Sometimes they’re waiting quietly in the parking lot.

Looking back, it wasn’t just about finding bargains. It was about spending a relaxed morning together, supporting local sellers, exploring one of the Helderberg’s most enjoyable weekend markets, and making memories along the way.

If you’re looking for things to do in Somerset West this weekend, the Southey Vines Car Boot Market is well worth adding to your list. Just remember to bring cash… and perhaps encourage the little ones to look at every toy stall before making their final decision.
