Why Living in Somerset West Means Enjoying Strand Beach All Year Round

One of the biggest surprises since moving to Somerset West has been discovering that beach days aren’t reserved for summer. Here in the Helderberg, the beach is part of everyday life, no matter the season.

One of the things I’ve happily become accustomed to since moving to Somerset West is that a trip to Strand Beach doesn’t have to wait for December. Some of our favourite family outings have happened in the middle of winter, wearing the same shorts and beach clothes we’d wear in January. On warmer winter days, we’ve even gone for a swim.

Coming from somewhere where a beach trip felt like something you planned weeks in advance, that’s still something I don’t take for granted.

A Different Kind of Beach Lifestyle

The beaches along Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard are undeniably spectacular. Clifton, Camps Bay and Llandudno are famous for good reason, and we’ll happily visit them to admire the scenery.

Living in the Helderberg, though, has introduced us to a different kind of coastal lifestyle. Here, the beach isn’t simply somewhere you stop to admire the view before driving home. It’s a place where life happens.

Children spend hours digging in the sand. Families paddle in the shallows. People stroll barefoot along the shoreline, stop for an ice cream, or simply sit on the promenade watching the waves roll into False Bay. It’s a beach that’s meant to be enjoyed, not just photographed.

Strand Beach Has Become Part of Our Routine

Like many local families, we find ourselves returning to Strand Beach almost every weekend when the weather allows.

Sometimes we’re building sandcastles. Sometimes our son is more interested in chasing waves than sitting still. Other days we simply relax while he burns off enough energy to make the drive home wonderfully quiet. It no longer feels like a special outing. It simply feels like another weekend in Somerset West.

We usually visit during the morning, somewhere between 9:00 am and midday, when the beach has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Every now and then, after dropping our son at school, we’ll even squeeze in an early morning walk along the promenade before starting the day.

One evening, while driving along Beach Road, we noticed something that perfectly sums up life here. It was around 9:00 pm, yet the beachfront was still alive. Families sat in camping chairs facing the ocean, couples walked hand in hand along the shoreline, and others simply stood quietly watching the moonlight shimmer across the water.

Of course, this is South Africa, and it’s always important to remain aware of your surroundings, choose your timing carefully and take sensible precautions. Even so, it was lovely to see so many people still enjoying the beachfront.

One of the Best Things About Living in Somerset West

One thing continues to surprise us about Strand Beach. It doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s the middle of summer or the heart of winter. Whether it’s a calm morning or a breezier afternoon. Whether you arrive at sunrise or later in the day.

There are almost always people there. Some are swimming. Some are walking their dogs. Others are enjoying coffee on the promenade or simply sitting quietly, taking in the view across False Bay.

Perhaps that’s one of the biggest lifestyle changes we’ve experienced since moving to the Helderberg. The beach isn’t somewhere you save for holidays. It’s simply part of everyday life in Somerset West.

And for our family, that’s become one of the very best reasons to call this beautiful corner of the Western Cape home.
