A sunny winter stop at KWIKSPAR De Helderbosch in Somerset West reminded us why their cinnamon doughnuts are our favourite local sweet treat.
Sometimes all it takes is a craving to turn an ordinary errand into one of the nicest moments of the day.
That’s exactly what happened today. I had been craving the cinnamon doughnuts from KWIKSPAR De Helderbosch at Cylnor Centre, so we decided to pop in while we were out. Located at the corner of Old Stellenbosch Road and Helderberg College Road in Helena Heights, Cylnor Centre is one of those small neighbourhood shopping hubs that we find ourselves visiting regularly.
The cinnamon doughnuts that keep calling us back
I’ve tried plenty of cinnamon doughnuts over the years, but these remain my favourite. We picked up a pack of four for R32.99, and they were worth every cent.
They’re perfectly sweet, generously coated in cinnamon sugar, wonderfully aromatic and, most importantly, incredibly moist on the inside. Every bite is soft, fresh and packed with flavour. They’re the kind of doughnuts that disappear far too quickly.
Our second favourite cinnamon doughnuts come from Food Lover’s Market. They’re just as delicious, although we find they’re slightly less moist than the ones from KWIKSPAR De Helderbosch. That’s really the only difference. Both are excellent, but if I had to choose just one, KWIKSPAR still comes out on top.
Interestingly, our son has very different taste buds. Cinnamon doughnuts don’t tempt him at all. He happily munched on the Fritos we’d picked up instead, while my husband and I enjoyed every last bite of our doughnuts. If he does choose a doughnut, it’s almost always a glazed one.

A view that makes every coffee break better
It turned out to be one of those beautiful, bright winter days that Somerset West does so well.
Instead of heading straight home, we decided to do what we sometimes do when we’re not in a rush. We parked the car and enjoyed our doughnuts right there.
From the parking area, we looked out across the beautiful views stretching towards False Bay, with the Helderberg mountains standing proudly beneath a clear blue sky. Sitting there with fresh cinnamon doughnuts in hand, the sunshine on our faces and one of the best views in Somerset West in front of us, it felt like the perfect way to slow down for half an hour.
Sometimes the simplest moments become the most memorable.

A quick scare that turned into good news
While we were there, we noticed construction work taking place at Taurelle Hair Salon.
At first, we wondered whether the salon might be closing or relocating, as there was quite a bit of activity around the building. Thankfully, after asking, we discovered it was simply roof and ceiling maintenance.
So, for anyone else who may have driven past and wondered the same thing, there’s no need to worry. Taurelle Hair Salon isn’t going anywhere.
It’s little neighbourhood moments like these that remind us why we enjoy visiting places like Cylnor Centre. Whether it’s picking up groceries from KWIKSPAR De Helderbosch, grabbing something from Pharmacy at SPAR Cylnor, satisfying a cinnamon doughnut craving or simply taking a few minutes to admire the view, it’s one of those everyday Somerset West stops that always seems to brighten our day.
