A rainy day in Monte Sereno, Somerset West reminded us how quickly the Western Cape’s winter weather can change from dark skies to sunshine.
Having lived in Joburg, winter rain was something we simply weren’t accustomed to. Summer was the rainy season, while winter usually brought clear blue skies and dry, crisp days.
Moving to Somerset West meant adjusting to an entirely different rhythm. Here, winter is when the rain arrives, and some days it feels as though you experience every season before lunchtime.
Four Seasons in a Single Day
One of the things that surprised us most after moving to the Helderberg was how dark winter mornings can be. At around 7:00 am, especially on rainy or heavily overcast days, it still feels remarkably close to night. Then, almost without warning, the clouds part, the sun appears for a while, and before long another shower rolls through.
It’s this constantly changing weather that gives Somerset West so much character. The skies are never quite the same from one hour to the next, making even familiar streets feel completely different as the light changes throughout the day.
A Photographer’s Dream
As much as the weather keeps you guessing, it’s also one of the things we’ve grown to love most about living here.
For anyone who enjoys photography, whether professionally or simply as a hobby, the changing conditions create endless opportunities. Dramatic rain clouds, bursts of sunshine, reflections on wet roads and constantly shifting light all combine to make even an ordinary drive feel worthwhile.
The photos below were taken around Monte Sereno, capturing just one side of today’s ever-changing weather. Winter in Somerset West may be unpredictable, but that’s exactly what makes it so beautiful. Every rainy day tells a slightly different story.
