Woolworths Reveals Why Strand Square Store Closed in June

Woolworths has revealed that its Strand Square store struggled to meet financial targets before the lease was not renewed, ending its five-year run.

The Woolworths Foods store at Strand Square had only been open for five years when it closed at the end of June 2026.

The closure caught my attention because, while the store itself was gone, there had been little explanation of why Woolworths had decided not to continue at the location.

I reached out to Woolworths for some clarity, particularly around the store’s performance, what happened to its employees and whether the closure reflected a broader change in the company’s approach to the Helderberg.

The answer was fairly specific: the Strand Square store had struggled to reach the financial targets Woolworths expected from it.

Why did Woolworths close the store?

According to Woolworths, the decision was not taken lightly.

The retailer says the store had struggled to meet its financial targets since opening five years ago. It says several interventions and efforts were made to improve the store’s performance, but these ultimately did not change the picture enough.

Woolworths therefore decided not to renew the lease, bringing the Strand Square store’s run to an end.

Importantly, the company has not described the closure as part of a broader withdrawal from Strand or the Helderberg. Its explanation is centred on the performance of this particular store.

What happened to the employees?

The closure also raised the question of what happened to the people who worked there.

Woolworths says all employees affected by the closure have been accommodated at other stores within the Helderberg area.

That means the people who worked at Strand Square have remained within the business, rather than the closure resulting in them simply losing their jobs.

What does this mean for Strand customers?

For customers who used the Strand Square store, Woolworths is directing them to other stores in the area. These include The Sanctuary, Somerset Mall, Waterstone Village and Vergelegen Plein.

The retailer says it remains committed to the broader Helderberg and to serving its customers in the area.

That is worth noting because the closure could otherwise be read as a sign that Woolworths is reducing its presence in the region. The company says that is not the case.

A new investment at Somerset Mall

Another Woolworths food offering is about to arrive in the Helderberg.

The company is preparing to open a NOW NOW at Somerset Mall’s SM Food Market on 10 September 2026.

The quick-service concept is a different proposition from the Strand Square Foods store, with Woolworths describing the new location as part of its strategy to expand NOW NOW where it already has a strong base of Woolworths shoppers.

The retailer says there is a particularly high concentration of frequent Woolworths customers around Somerset Mall, making it a strategic location for the new format.

I recently wrote more about the new NOW NOW opening at Somerset Mall, including what customers can expect from the outlet.

A different chapter for Strand Square

There is something slightly strange about seeing a store that has been part of a shopping centre for five years simply disappear. But retail spaces change, and Strand Square is clearly no exception.

For Woolworths, the decision now has a straightforward explanation. For shoppers who used the store regularly, however, the practical reality is simply that a familiar local option is no longer there.

And perhaps that is the more interesting part of what happens next. Strand Square will continue to change, as shopping centres inevitably do, while Woolworths’ focus shifts elsewhere in the Helderberg.
