From Rain to Sunshine and Back Again: A Dramatic Winter Sky Over Somerset West

One winter’s day in Somerset West delivered almost every kind of weather imaginable, ending with a breathtaking display of storm clouds over the Helderberg and False Bay.

Winter weather in Somerset West certainly knows how to keep you guessing. The day began with a gentle, peaceful rain. As we were getting ready for the school run, our son insisted on taking his umbrella because, in his words, “Wet outside, very wet outside.”

By the time we dropped him off at school and returned home barely ten minutes later, the steady rain had already eased into a light drizzle.

Being winter, 7:30 in the morning still feels remarkably dark, especially on overcast days. It almost feels as though the night is reluctant to let go. After breakfast, we opened the curtains and blinds expecting another gloomy morning, only to be greeted by a surprisingly bright world outside.

A Bright Morning Before the Storm

For much of the day, the weather couldn’t quite make up its mind. The clouds parted to reveal patches of blue sky and welcome sunshine before gradually gathering once again. Throughout the afternoon, the weather shifted back and forth between calm showers and heavier bursts of rain, each one passing almost as quickly as it arrived.

Just before the next downpour rolled in, we stopped near the intersection of Scholtz Road and Main Road to admire the view.

Looking out across False Bay, the sky had become a spectacle in itself. Deep navy clouds stretched across the horizon while the setting sun slipped through gaps in the cloud cover, casting warm orange light between the darker layers. It was one of those evenings where the colours changed almost by the minute.

The Ever-Changing Helderberg Sky

There was something both peaceful and dramatic about the scene. The heavy clouds hung low over the ocean like silent guardians, creating an atmosphere that felt both powerful and calming at the same time.

Living in Somerset West, I’ve learnt that the weather can change in an instant, but that’s also part of its charm. One moment you’re reaching for an umbrella, the next you’re enjoying blue skies, only to find dramatic storm clouds returning a few hours later.

Days like these are a reminder that some of the best views in Somerset West aren’t planned. Sometimes they appear unexpectedly, between errands, on the drive home, just before the rain begins again.
