One of the things that quietly became part of the Helderberg over the years wasn’t a shopping centre or a restaurant, but a local auction house where thousands of household items found new owners.
Whether you were clearing out an estate, searching for antique furniture, browsing artwork or simply hoping to uncover an unusual bargain, Alf Duncan Auctioneers became a familiar destination for generations of buyers and sellers.
During a recent visit to the company’s long-time premises at Gants Plaza in Strand, however, it was clear something had changed.
Offices temporarily closed
HelderbergStuff visited the premises this week after noticing growing discussion online from residents trying to establish what had happened to the business.
The offices were closed, no staff were present, and a “To Let” board has now been placed over part of the property’s existing Alf Duncan Auctioneers signage.
Repeated attempts by HelderbergStuff to contact the business on its published telephone number, 021 854 8589, were unsuccessful.
The company’s website currently displays the following notice:
“Our offices are temporarily closed. We will be updating details soonest.”
The website also states that there are currently no auctions scheduled. During HelderbergStuff’s visit, the “Next Auction” board displayed outside the premises was also blank, with no upcoming auction dates listed.
The last public update
The company’s most recent activity on social media was on Monday, 27 July 2026, when it promoted its “Spring in July” timed online auction.
That auction has since concluded, with completed listings remaining visible on the online bidding platform.
Since then, questions have steadily appeared on local community Facebook groups from people who say they have been unable to reach the business.
Questions remain
At the time of publication, HelderbergStuff had been unable to establish why the offices are currently closed.
While speculation has circulated online that the company may be entering liquidation, no public statement confirming this has been published on the company’s website or Facebook page.
Likewise, no notice identifying an appointed liquidator was displayed at the premises during our visit or published on the company’s website.
For now, the only official communication from Alf Duncan Auctioneers remains that its offices are “temporarily closed” and that there are no auctions currently scheduled.
A familiar part of the Helderberg
For many years, Alf Duncan Auctioneers formed part of the Helderberg’s second-hand economy, providing a marketplace where furniture, paintings, collectibles, tools and household goods regularly changed hands.
For many local households, it was simply the place to visit when looking for something unique or when giving unwanted possessions a second life.
Whether the current closure proves temporary or marks the end of a long-standing local business remains to be seen.
HelderbergStuff has reached out to Alf Duncan Auctioneers for comment and will update this article should a response be received.
