Mental Health Care Expands in the Helderberg

Busamed Paardevlei has expanded mental health services in Somerset West, giving Helderberg residents better access to psychiatrists, psychologists and structured psychiatric care.

Access to specialist healthcare in the Helderberg continues to improve, with mental health becoming one of the latest areas where residents now have more options closer to home.

For many years, people needing specialist psychiatric care or structured inpatient treatment often had little choice but to travel to Stellenbosch or Cape Town. While local psychologists and general practitioners have long served the community, dedicated inpatient psychiatric facilities in the Helderberg have remained limited.

That picture is now beginning to change.

Busamed Paardevlei Private Hospital has expanded its mental health services with the opening of Thrive@Busamed, a dedicated inpatient psychiatric facility at Halo Medical Suites in Somerset West. The unit officially admitted its first patients in April 2026, with admissions beginning just two days after opening, highlighting demand for specialist mental healthcare in the region.

Filling a longstanding gap

According to Busamed, the unit was established in response to growing pressure on mental healthcare services in the Western Cape, where limited bed availability and long waiting periods have made timely treatment difficult for many patients.
The voluntary inpatient facility currently provides 26 beds, with plans already in place to expand capacity to 36 as demand continues to increase.

It provides treatment for adults experiencing depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), burnout, trauma-related conditions and personality disorders. The unit also offers medically supervised alcohol and drug detox programmes.

Patients are cared for by multidisciplinary teams that may include psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians, specialised mental health nurses and social workers. Treatment combines psychiatric care with psychological support, occupational therapy, group programmes, physical wellness activities and nutritional guidance.

The unit also has direct access to Busamed Paardevlei’s emergency department, allowing patients requiring urgent medical intervention to receive immediate care.

Demand arrived immediately

The hospital says demand exceeded its initial expectations almost immediately after opening. Admissions began within two days, and patients have since travelled not only from across the Western Cape but also from other provinces, reflecting broader pressure on South Africa’s specialist mental healthcare system.

Patients may access the unit through referrals from general practitioners or psychologists, or through the hospital’s emergency department, where on-call psychiatrists assess new admissions. The facility accepts both medical aid and private-paying patients.

Busamed also plans to expand its role beyond inpatient care through community mental health awareness initiatives, including outreach programmes planned for Strand, Eerste River and Khayelitsha.

Part of a broader shift in Helderberg healthcare

The expansion reflects a wider trend that has quietly been unfolding across the Helderberg. In recent months, UniCare Somerset West opened its new medical facility, bringing a 24-hour pharmacy and expanded primary healthcare services to the area.

PathCare has opened a new Patient Centre in Strand, while Mediclinic Vergelegen recently announced that specialist psychiatrist Dr Keagan Clay has begun consulting from the hospital.

Viewed individually, each of these developments may appear relatively modest. Together, however, they point to a meaningful shift.

As the Helderberg’s population continues to grow, more specialist healthcare services are becoming available locally, reducing the need for residents to travel outside the region for treatment. Mental healthcare has historically been one of the area’s most underserved services, making the expansion of dedicated psychiatric care a significant milestone for the community.
