The popular News Cafe franchise has opened at Shop G14 on Niblick Way in Firgrove Rural, offering all-day dining, coffee and late-night weekend drinks.
News Cafe Somerset West has officially opened at The Sanctuary Shopping Centre, bringing the well-known restaurant and bar brand to the Helderberg community.
For anyone who regularly shops or passes through The Sanctuary, the new News Cafe adds another convenient dining option. From morning coffee to after-work catch-ups and weekend evenings out, the venue appears to be embracing the familiar News Cafe experience, with social media teasing the brand’s well-known favourites.
Early mornings and late nights
One of the things I noticed immediately from their official announcement on Monday, 6 July 2026, was the trading hours, which are quite ambitious for the area. According to their listing, they’re opening as early as 07:30 on weekdays, a massive plus for anyone needing a proper coffee before the traffic on the N2 starts backing up.
The weekend energy also looks set to be a significant drawcard for the younger crowd or anyone looking for a late night, with the venue staying open until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday. Sundays appear to be geared more towards that slower, family-style brunch vibe, opening a little later at 08:30 and wrapping things up by 22:00.
Menu and atmosphere at The Sanctuary
Based on updates shared by both the franchise and The Sanctuary Shopping Centre, News Cafe appears to be sticking to its classic formula. The menu covers everything from breakfast and light lunches to more substantial dinner options, while its Instagram has been teasing a mix of the brand’s well-known favourites.
What really surprised me, though, was the setting itself. Although I’ve often visited Somerset Mall, The Value Centre and other nearby spots, I’d somehow never actually explored The Sanctuary. Seeing where News Cafe is nestled gave me a completely different impression of the centre.
Overlooking a peaceful lake surrounded by landscaped gardens, mature trees and colourful flowering plants, the restaurant enjoys a calm, nature-filled setting that’s hard to believe is just moments from one of Somerset West’s busiest roads. The scenery creates a relaxed atmosphere that’s ideal for everything from a quiet morning coffee to a leisurely lunch.
The location is also particularly convenient thanks to the ample parking and the easy flow of the shopping centre. There’s no shortage of seating either, with a spacious outdoor terrace making the most of the beautiful views, complemented by a generous indoor dining area that offers plenty of room regardless of the weather.
Settling into the Firgrove Rural neighbourhood
I am personally looking forward to seeing how the vibe evolves over the next few weeks. Given the tranquil surroundings during the day, it’s easy to imagine people lingering over coffee or lunch while enjoying the views before the atmosphere gradually shifts into the more social evening experience News Cafe is known for. The Sanctuary has always had a very specific, relaxed community feel, and adding a brand that embraces cocktail culture and evening entertainment will be an interesting evolution for the centre.
For now, it’s simply great to have another option for those of us who spend a lot of time in this corner of the Helderberg. Whether it’s for a quick caffeine fix after a gym session, a relaxed breakfast overlooking the lake, or a proper evening out with friends, it looks like a solid addition to the local dining circuit.
