Uniq Clothing by Checkers has quietly opened at Somerset Mall in Somerset West, giving the town its second Uniq store alongside Waterstone Village.
If you’ve driven past Somerset Mall recently, you may have noticed one of the centre’s “Our New Additions” billboards featuring Uniq Clothing by Checkers, among others.
That’s exactly how I discovered it.
I have to admit, I didn’t even know Checkers had its own clothing brand. It wasn’t until I got home and started looking into Uniq that I realised just how established the retailer already is.
A Quiet Arrival at Somerset Mall
Interestingly, neither Somerset Mall nor Uniq Clothing had made any social media announcement about the new store at the time of writing.
In fact, we first spotted the billboard while driving past the mall, and then on Monday, 20 July 2026, noticed another Uniq advertisement near Entrance 4 while heading inside. It was only then that we realised a new fashion retailer had quietly arrived.
Curious to learn more, I visited the Uniq website and was genuinely surprised to discover how many stores the brand already operates across South Africa.
Since launching as a standalone clothing brand in 2023, Uniq Clothing has expanded rapidly and now has stores across eight provinces, including more than 14 locations in the Western Cape.
Somerset West Now Has Two Uniq Stores
One thing I hadn’t realised is that Somerset West already had a Uniq store. According to the retailer’s online store locator, Uniq has been trading from Waterstone Village, making the new Somerset Mall branch the second Uniq Clothing store in Somerset West.
While the Waterstone Village branch offers a boutique-style shopping experience, the new Somerset Mall store provides customers with access to a broader product range, giving Somerset West shoppers two different ways to shop the brand.
Beyond Somerset West, there are currently no listed Uniq stores in Strand or Gordon’s Bay.
Elsewhere in the Cape Town area, the retailer also has stores at Blue Route Mall, Groot Phesantekraal, Kenilworth Centre, and Table Bay Mall, along with numerous locations across the rest of the country.
Uniq is the Shoprite Group’s fashion retail brand, offering clothing for women, men, teenagers, children and babies, as well as footwear and accessories. The brand focuses on timeless designs, premium everyday basics, and clothing for the whole family, with an emphasis on comfort, quality fabrics and value. The retailer has been steadily expanding across South Africa in recent years, opening new stores in shopping centres nationwide.
According to Uniq Clothing, the new Somerset Mall store has been designed to offer a spacious shopping environment, knowledgeable staff and self-service checkout facilities to make shopping quicker and more convenient.
I’ll Be Taking a Look Soon
I completely missed this opening until I happened to notice the signage at Somerset Mall, and without that billboard, I probably wouldn’t have known the store had opened at all. Since I had no idea this was in the works, it’s definitely one I’ll be adding to my list to visit soon.
Knowing a little more about the brand now, I’m even more interested to see how the larger Somerset Mall store compares with the boutique branch at Waterstone Village. I’m curious to see what the store is like in person and whether it’s something that will become a regular stop during future visits to the mall.
It just goes to show that, every now and then, a new addition can quietly arrive without much fanfare, only to catch your attention when you least expect it.
