Dramatic Storm Clouds Over Somerset West Paint the Helderberg Sky

An evening drive through Somerset West revealed dramatic storm clouds, glowing sunset colours and beautiful Helderberg views near Scholtz Road.

On our way home from grocery shopping at Waterstone Village, we found ourselves stopping near the intersection of Scholtz Road and Main Road to admire the view towards the Dutch Reformed Church Helderberg and the mountains beyond.

The sky was impossible to ignore. Dark, navy-blue clouds had gathered over the Helderberg, while the setting sun found its way through the gaps, painting streaks of warm orange and gold across the evening sky. It was one of those moments where the colours seemed to change every few seconds, making it difficult to look away.

There was something incredibly peaceful about the scene. Despite the dramatic clouds rolling in, the atmosphere felt calm, and the view across Somerset West was simply beautiful.

A Sky That Brings Back Memories

At the same time, I couldn’t help thinking back to the devastating storm that swept across parts of the Western Cape in April 2024. Those heavy rains brought widespread flooding and damage to many communities, so seeing dark clouds gathering again naturally stirs a little concern.

Thankfully, not every dramatic sky tells the same story.

Hoping for Gentle Rain This Time

This time, I’m hoping the clouds bring nothing more than gentle, steady rain.

The Helderberg has a way of making even approaching rain look beautiful, and if these clouds simply water our gardens, fill the dams and leave us with another spectacular sunset, I’ll happily take that.

It’s another reminder that everyday drives through Somerset West often come with extraordinary views. Sometimes all it takes is a quick stop along the road to appreciate the ever-changing beauty of the Helderberg sky.
