The long-closed Astron Energy fuel station on Strand Main Road is showing signs of activity, with preparation work now under way ahead of its slated December reopening.
A familiar sight on Strand Main Road could be making a return before the end of the year, with the long-closed Astron Energy fuel station now showing signs of activity.
When I photographed the property on 24 August 2026, it was fenced off but largely exposed to the road. Since last week, new construction barrier netting has been added around the site.
Information about the redevelopment remains limited, but conversations around the project indicate that December 2026 is the slated opening date. Staff have also been seen working inside the Freshstop, carrying out preparation ahead of the reopening.
A familiar site with a long history
The site closed more than a year ago without warning, by which point it was already operating as an Astron Energy fuel station.
Its history stretches further back. The site was originally a Caltex fuel station, operating as Careno Freshstop, before the business was acquired and subsequently rebranded under Astron Energy.
It was during the earlier Caltex-era operation that the site became particularly familiar to some residents for its Seattle Coffee Co. outlet. Alongside the fuel station, the property had a Freshstop convenience store and car wash.
Signs of work inside and out
The full extent of the redevelopment is still unclear. There has been no detailed public announcement outlining exactly what the completed site will look like or whether all of the previous facilities will return in the same form.
What is clear is that the station is being prepared for a return under the Astron Energy name, with December 2026 being discussed as the intended opening period.
That date should be regarded as a slated opening rather than a confirmed public opening date, particularly while work remains under way.
Another Astron Energy for the Helderberg
The Strand redevelopment comes as another Astron Energy fuel station is planned for 50 Victoria Street in Somerset West, with the development set to include a Burger King drive-thru and a Vida e Caffè.
This gives Astron Energy two developments in the Helderberg at roughly the same time, in Strand and Somerset West.
I approached Astron Energy for more comprehensive information about the Strand redevelopment and planned opening, but had not received a response at the time of publishing. I will update this article should the company provide further details.
